Abstract

Ensuring the availability of software systems, particularly in critical sectors like banking, safety, aerospace, and healthcare, is of paramount importance due to their vital roles. Availability, a key indicator of computer system effectiveness, is intertwined with reliability, efficiency, and performance, collectively shaping software quality. This paper investigates the role of software architecture in achieving high availability and proposes a method for evaluating availability during the early phases of software development. By employing architectural patterns in the initial stages of development, software reliability can be enhanced. Software architecture styles profoundly influence software quality attributes, necessitating careful style selection To demonstrate the proposed approach, a mobile payment system model is chosen. The study employs UML diagrams, particularly sequence diagrams, to capture architectural behaviors. In cases where standard UML was insufficient, the study adapts the methodology by incorporating stereotypes and marginalizing the availability metric. This process culminates in a refined model, allowing the application of availability analysis. The Petri model, created using cpntools software, facilitates quantitative availability assessment The findings highlight the significance of incorporating availability assessment into architectural design, aiding in preemptively identifying and mitigating potential issues. This research contributes to the advancement of software development practices in safety-critical domains, ensuring robust and dependable systems
